Porter County once housed its first brick company in the 1870s and was a significant local employer. Unfortunately, a tragic incident at the Porter brickyard occurred in 1904. There was an explosion resulting in a major disaster, causing significant destruction which led to the loss of several lives. This incident highlighted the dangers industrial workers faced during that era, where subsequent changes in safety regulations were established.
